In Reaper, i save the layouts for different views and also save VSTi presets in Reaper format.

That would be sweet. I have spent a decent amount of time making templates for pro tools; routing Native Instruments Battery to individual channels with busses, side compression set on all the appropriate channels etc. I would hate to set this up every time I was feeling creative. I would love to play around on other peoples templates too. How do we go about this?

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to share some of my VST presets because I like to rename my VST .DLL's to names that are more logical. Names like Fre(a)kascope-X11_2 modular.dll are ridiculous to me, so I just rename it to something like fScope.dll

But I would still try to help sharing templates.

do you also rename "Reaktor5.dll" to "Reactor.dll" and "Kontakt5.dll" to "Contact.dll"?

Actually, sometimes i do. Although I don't rename payware installs as those can be broken. I mostly use freeware though and if it's version 1 or 2 or whatever of vaporware, I know there aren't going to be any other versions so I just install whatever version works and get rid of the number.

I know this is slightly OCD of me, but for some reason when I'm glancing at my archives the numbers confuse me slightly. When it's just words, I'm not as confused.

Luckily, Reaper lets you rename the VST(i)'s from within the interface so I've been doing more of that instead of renaming the .DLL's So instead of TAL-Reverb 2 (TAL-Togu Audio Line). It just says TAL-Reverb (Togu Audio Line). Since I only use one of those, I'm not confused by the versioning.

I know yeah, I'm a little bit retarded about this, but it's just how my mind works.

But I still rename the DLL's as part of archiving. Typically, I delete everything in the archive except for the DLL and the manual and resave it as a 7zip instead of a zip. It makes it a lot easier during re-installs to not have tons of garbage files. And I give the archive name a name I will remember, instead of something obscure.

Also, in my VST folder, I put each VST into it's own folder which also makes it a lot neater and easier to read. And when .SEM and tmp files get created, they aren't poluting the main folder.

I know this is anal, but I am actually less anal about this stuff than I used to be.

...Actually, some templates for Reaper still might work, because Reaper uses the internal VST file name instead of the hard drive name I think. So maybe I could contribute some templates.

I also have seperate folders for 32 bit/64bit (dll), program, content/library and ofc I don't allow a plugin to install somewhere into documents/program data or what ever else on C: - Has to be nice and clean

I'm also trying to keep my synth patches and samples somehow sorted logically - Which might seem easy, but imagine having synth patches from more a decade^^

Maybe I should delete all those useless factory presets as well as those I've downloaded for whatever reason. Don't use presets anyway. Dunno, makes me feel superstar dj^^

Sample folders simly is a mess, but I don't work with samples anmore anyway....

Ofc I have templates for my DAW.

a buddy of mine used the Tempest. I found it difficult to use. The OS at the time was weak. That said, it did sound good.

Dave Smith instruments kick ass.

No. I'm against the idea of using templates (unless the purpose is just to make midi routing easier for hardware), instead of using templates I just save mixer presets for different things

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

At all times on my master channel I have:

A mastering plugin for NY style compression and EQ.
A parametric EQ capable of doing Mid-Side
A Mid-Side plugin
A lookahead brick wall limiter with output set to -0.1 dBfs

Everything is disabled by default except for the limiter.
The whole chain is disabled by default so that I can overdub without latency.

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

I have a default template for all my projects. Got quite a few midi devices and sound generators that need routing. Would hate to redo that every time.

My default setup has 48 tracks that output from different devices. Now, I don't use all of them every time, so I start out with all the tracks hidden, and display them when I need them.

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

in FL Studio ill setup a few basic drum samples and then i will build onto my songs each with more samples especially different ones. most of the time i use the same synth for a bassline and each song ill tweak the bass synth a little. everything else is new. but its good to start fresh or start small.

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

Here's my default project template for live that I use at the moment:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

Basically four drum racks: Kicks, Snares (and Claps), Hats and Percs, then an empty MIDI and two empty audio tracks, and a sidechain.

Each drum rack has chain routes bussed out to their respective return tracks for individual pad routing.

I've removed all of my samples because a lot of them are from libraries. But basically, drop ALL of your kicks into kicks, snares to snares and so on. Then when you get started there's a MIDI pattern for each and you can use that to cycle through your samples.

Gain stage rack with filters, saturator and glue compressor.

Then the return tracks are A - Reverb, B - Delay and C - NI Replika sends.

I have template in Ableton. I loaded drum rack, couple samplers (because I mostly work with samplers) and an empty midi track plus 2 returns with delay and reverb.

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

never bothered with templates. I don't like the idea when template starts dictating my workflow which is a total mess anyway. I like to start fresh every time. I'd rather navigate and pick stuff I want to play along by myself and drag them in every time I start a new project. Doesn't take too much of time. So I'm stuck with default Live template which has 2 audio, midi and return tracks. Blank template is the best.

I actually have Saved vst's for Bass, Kick, Snare, Vocal. In cubase you can save Insert setup. Sometimes different projects need different tweeks but overall I usually use same vst's setups for these things.

Re: Do you have a template setup for your DAW

I have set up and used templates when I know I'm going to be doing a bunch of similar tracks (ie recording a rock band setup or whatever). Otherwise I agree with ms_ that I end up getting a bit of tunnel vision and just working around what's already there. Sometimes that's ok but I mostly like to start with a blank slate.
