Re: Good analog compressor that doesn't cost an arm & leg?

The BSS 402 will arrive tomorrow. I plan to use it to give the kick some punch. So, thanks to thom and eBay I'll be all set, soon. I'm also running a sidechain track through the Octatrack, which has a decent compressor. I also can use the 828x DSP to apply compression and a limited, but I generally leave that to ITB polishing.

I have a dbx and it sounds like poo to me.. FYI.

Played in a studio tonight that was running the bass player through a CL 1B. Holy crap. That thing is amazing

Re: Good analog compressor that doesn't cost an arm & leg?

All fine and well, except that one channel input is broken. I use it as a single channel kick drum side chain compressor and it does that job fine.

I endend up buying this baby here (DBX 566 analog tube compressor) to tame the transients of those 303 boxes:
Since it has both channels working and those analog VU meters, I've become somewhat infatuated with it. Got it for $450. It sold for $1k in its day. If I had to ascribe it a quality, I'd call it warm, which means it really doesn't do much (beyond taming transients).

I think I'm all set with OTB compression. The Analog Heat can be configured to do some compression as well, so hard to argue for more.

Re: Good analog compressor that doesn't cost an arm & leg?

Woah.. One channel isn't working? You gonna send it back?

Also, you saying you're using it for sidechain compression? That seems like kind of a waste. If it's as nice a compressor as thom is claiming, seems like a) you should either get it fixed or send it back. B) you should use it for bus compression (sub buss or master), so that you'll get your money worth. To me that's like getting a $2000 guitar to play punk rock. My $90 Alesis 3630 did good sidechain compression and everybody acts like that thing is worse than hitler.

Maybe i missed something in this thread tho

Re: Good analog compressor that doesn't cost an arm & leg?

Well, it's what I got the unit for. Sending it back is not an option as the seller is incommunicado since I alerted him to the fact. It's also a costly pain in the neck. Having it repaired is something I'm considering, but I'm not sure where (likely involves shipping it).

As for bus compression or master bus compression, I do that ITB.

Oh and uh... you can also wire that channel up using the screws in the back. You're not forced to use the XLR jacks.
