Good Synths that are not subtractive

So I did some trading around with my prophet 8 which I regret, but now I am looking for a flexible synth to properly replace it that is not subtractive. I have subtractive analog mono and poly covered.

I am looking into the nord lead 4, but also a prophet 12. There is a good price difference, and the modules I think can be found for considerably less. I want to know if any of you guys have experience with these machines, and would recommend one over the other, and why?

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

Those are both subtractive synths. Even things like the microwave xt which is a wavetable synth has a subtractive element. It just means it has a filter basically.

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

As far as stand alone, hardware synths go, you don't have a lot of options for strictly non-subtractive synthesis. You've got Casio CZ series, Yamaha DX series, Prophet VS, Korg Wavestation, Fizmo, Hartmann Neuron, and maybe a few others.

Hammond, and other tonewheel organs, are additive - so are the digital clones of them. They're also the original thing the term "synthesizer" was applied to, by Thaddeus Cahill, the inventor of Telharmonium. Theremin is based on heterodyning two radio-frequency oscillators, and technically also counts as a synthesizer.

But yeah, slim pickings. The Elektron Monomachine has a bunch of different modes though, right? I have never used one but I think it does PM at least.

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

How about a Korg Volca FM? Certainly not subtractive.
Then there is modular Eurorack ...

...Which is awesome btw! Just the tiny knobs kinda annoy me, cause the parameter knob is next to the algorythm knob and I always touch that one while stepping through the parameters...Hooking up and external midi controller would just give me the same controls (only the controls, that are accesible from the front panel receive midi) so...Soundwise this little thing really is amazing!

Why exactly are you looking for a non-substractive synth?

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

Personally I would probably go software for getting away from subtractive synthesis. Probably FM8 to start, its popular so you will likely find lots of resources to learn it.

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

am I being a flat headed cunt as per yoosh or is additive basically not a thing

I thought additive was the process of creating sound by adding/layering signals together to build a sound

subtractive is pulling bits away from a sound to shape it with the use of filters etc

so additive is just a normal synth but without filters and other good shit hmmmmmm??

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

The Nord Modulars.

They're every hybrid between any kind of synthesis ever + + (except wavetable/sample based.. but then again the G2 can do crude sampling stuff)

With additive synthesis you add specific harmonics to generate the sound. Alchemy is a good example of this. So it's different than what you describe here. its kind of like drawing your own waveform.

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

well the prophet 12 is subtractive, and so is the nord lead 4. They have some hydrid elements like FM and digital wavesforms, but overall they are subtractive.

A friend of mine had a prophet 12 and I likes it way more than I thought I would. Not the biggest fan of the dave smith sound, but this one is so flexible that you can really get some cool stuff out of it.

Now, if you want an actual not subtractive synth, I would suggest going software. Better options there. As some folks said, additive synths are cool. Harmor, in particular is amazing. It will take you some time to learn, but IMO it's one of the best digital synths out there.

as soon as you filter it it's also subtractive tho right?? ?

Yes.. So then folks will call it a "hybrid synth". Which is a bit silly to me because the word synthesis means combining things lol. I just think of a synth as having certain elements.

If you want to get technical tho, harmor and razor are both exclusively additive. Even though they have filters, they are not "real" filters because they don't do their work on the audio signal, they are all just effect the math of the additive engine before it is ever converted to an audio signal in the first place.

I think of additive synths as the most crazy tricked out oscillators, because that's really all they are.

Pretty sure alchemy has "real" filters so it's not exclusively additive

Re: Good Synths that are not subtractive

ahhh ok

I had the terms in my head from when I was doing pure data stuff for uni and we were only messing around with simple oscillators so additive seemed like a pointless term at the time
