JX-8P still useful?

A couple friends of mine have offered to give me a Roland JX-8P that they don't have room for anymore. The soldering points on the pitch bend wheel have worn lose and I don't think I'm getting the PG-800 with it.

I know I could find some use for it or hold onto it as a backup if I ever need it so I'm definitely taking them up on the offer. I'm just not familiar with this synth and am wondering if it could be used as a go to unit when compared to softsynths, my jd-xi, and Yamaha qy-70. Any thoughts?

Re: JX-8P still useful?

I see no reason to not try to use it. A free six voice analog...I'd try to use it! Maybe you can save up for the programmer. I see this synth come up, in a positive light, in many GearSlutz threads. There might be mobile apps that could control it, depending on the MIDI implementation.

Just using the presets or tweaking the presets is an option as well.

Some programmer alternatives here.

Not super hands on, but sounds great.

Really great. If you decide you don't like it lets make a deal, I'll drive to the springs.

Yeah, that editor sounds like a must without the PG-800, but definitely have a go with it and if you can't get into it ebay/craigslist/chasedobson.

Don't you have enough toys Mr. Dobson? I picture you sitting in a room stacked from floor to ceiling with boxes and cables hanging everywhere, like that dude's computer room in Pi.

Re: JX-8P still useful?

ha!

i really dont have all that much stuff, i mean comparatively. Check out the "pictures of your studio" thread, there are some serious studios up in there. Mine gets the job done, but the lust for gear.... and for me, that particular synth is real.

ive been eyeing them on reverb.com and a few other places, i used to have a Juno60 and would like a little classic roland flavor up in the studio.

You could probably find one to buy for less than a trip to Colorado Springs.

They consistently pop up on local Craigslist here for ~$500.

Never mind - you're already in CO!

Get it, dude. You need to have a ridiculous number of synths falling all over the place in your music room/space. It's the law.

Re: JX-8P still useful? update

So the state of disrepair was a bit larger than I anticipated. I'm pretty sure there's a whole board missing from the left side, and the pitch bend is just gone....but if I can get it to power on (I'm thinking the internal battery needs replaced) it will still function as a sound module and I can control it with my qy-70. Never look a free synth in the mouth or something. Thanks to the homies Revolution State for hooking me up with their old gear. In addition to this they gave me a 2-tier stand and a MOTU 2408mk2 interface (pci card not included though...kind of a bummer).

Also got to play around with a modular the first time at their house last night. Sat me down in front of a Voyager....felt like I was in a spaceship.

Re: JX-8P still useful?

ah yes, rev state. CO pplz. Erikson was a friend/fan/collaborator if i remember correctly.

pretty sure you can button that 8P up with a little know how, that said, its hard to tell how severe the damage is.

im only SO good with the repairing/modification of things but with even MORE know how you might be able to fit its gutz into a rack unit and forgo the keyboard pitch bender and mod thingy all together.

looks like a fun pet project if you are feeling so inclined. im the dummy that breaks shit worse before making it work, its been the case with my Novation BassStation (original, not BS2) and my good friend's Juno 106 (god knows why he allowed me to take a soldering iron to it).

If you want to get an idea of how it sounds, well you can basically get this in vsti form (although highly unofficial)

I used the fuck out of that synth for a project a couple of years ago. It's one of my favorites, ever.

fyi the battery has nothing to do with powering on. It just supplies a tiny bit of voltage for the chip that patches are stored on when you turn it off. If it won't turn on, you need to look at repairing the power supply.

Good to know. I've never taken on a project like this so I'm gonna have to do some research before I start touching stuff. Thanks.
