Mixing & Mastering Project

Why don't we have projects and threads where we offer up tracks to be mixed or mastered by other members as an exercise for people who want to improve their mixing and/or mastering skills while helping out the members who perhaps aren't so hot in these areas?

Seems like a no-brainer really, no?

Rules:

All audio uploaded by members in this thread remains the sole property of the member who originally uploaded it here and permission is not given for any remixing, or reuse of that audio outside of the IDMF Mixing & Mastering project it is intended for, unless expressly granted by the individual member in their post, at which point it becomes public domain to all members.

When posting your mix or final master version of the track online for us to hear you must credit the artist and track used as is standard practice.

e.g. IDMf MMP (benwaa's track- lolirl mix)

Please clearly state the audio format and sample rate when uploading audio.

Anyone found to be misusing or misappropriating audio kindly volunteered here will be removed from the forum.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

It could work so long as both are using the same DAW and plugins, otherwise it probably means sending uncompressed .WAVs for each track in a project.

Even for my smaller projects that would be like 20+ .WAV files, which would be rather large.

While I understand your point, the practice is fairly standard.

Yeh, it could be laborious but it can be done. I've done it before myself. Specifically I used Dropbox but Soundcloud, Gobbler, etc, all can be used.

This kind of issue comes up during collaborations on these forums but its quite workable if you don't mind the effort.

People who can't be arsed to put in the effort can give this a wide birth and let those who can get on with improving their productions.

I'm totally up to that. I'll be more on the receiving side for now but I'll make sure to have clean recordings to share when possible

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

Mixing practice? I could post some multitracks from various projects if needed. Likely 16 bit wav format but still worth it I think.

I don't see the problem with 16 bit .wav...seems pretty standard for mix stems IMO.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

The only reason I'd do that is to save time on the upload. Takes forever with 24 bit.

I've been doing this mixing practice on the other forum I go to for years, so this is something I'm right at home with doing. I already have a few things I could post up like a Colonizer track and maybe even some of my older metal stuff if anybody wants to try mixing something like that.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

^Yea...if it were a "pro" situation, 24bit would probably be preferable until bouncing a master.

Honestly, if you really want to make it a challenge people don't have to separate ever little sound into separate tracks...that is a totally ITB phenomenon really...

I wish I could commit the time to be a part of it but got too many things going on at the moment. If you wouldn't mind a quick hijack:

Are there any threads in the 'continuing story' vein? Meaning, one person does 8 bars, the next does the next 8 and so on?

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

No that would not be awesome, that would be terrible and if you don't know why then you definitely need some practice.
This is not a remix competition, it's about improving your mixdown skills.

This has given me an idea for a community thing. Not quite the same thing but potentially fun. I'll have a ponder. What I'm thinking is a No Drums thing. We choose a tempo and people make anything up to 20 seconds of music without any drumming in it. Once we've got enough for a track based on contributions, people start using the segments together and then put their own drumming under it and anything else they want, so long as they use a certain number of the contributions. The reason I separate out drumming is because this is one of the key things in giving a track continuity. Dunno. Maybe I'll post on FB and start throwing it around, see who's interested. Might be straying a bit into Altered Echo territory but since I don't remix I tend not get involved in that. Thinking on it a bit more, it would be a great way for people to practice their drum programming (or playing).

Sorry for the off topic.

Back on topic:

Not sure what I can offer the mixing/mastering. I'm not really set up for good mastering and not sure I'd be able to offer expert mix advice to someone but if someone wants to risk their project with me, share up the .WAVs and I'll put some time into it. I work at 32bit 96K, so anything up to that is fine.

I cannot offer a persuasive argument to work at what I do. Its basically because I can. I built my own system and it's a bit of a beast, so resources are usually a non-issue for me. I've never got close to pushing the total CPU or memory available, even when I go mental with plugins and FX.

I've not always been so lucky. Started with laptop, no audio interface and no idea. I may still have no idea but at least I have a better rig.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

I'm not hating on it at all!

I just dont have the need or resources to do projects at that high of a resolution.

I'm pretty utilitarian in that way, use the one you got etc.
