What is modular systems & programming?

Can someone define it for me?

cause i think i might already kinda be doing it with vanilla ableton.

ok im wondering about the programming part tho...

and this:

)
seems like pretty much all electronic music that uses software

so what is it actually? other than something lots of people do with max/MSP?
do you have to be using a programming language?

not related to this i'm assuming haha [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

Modular system is a system with modules that make or modify the sound. You patch them together with cables.

Programming you might mean you program something to happen or trigger. I don't know much from both, so...

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

Well I mean, I would consider patching modules to be programming for sure. I would consider tweaking an effect pedal or operating a synthesizer programming. Doesn't necessarily have to be software programming.

From what I understand of Max/MSP environments, yes, you are actually building your own synthesizers.

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

I've heard producers say they're programming when working in a DAW writing beats or making sounds. Also, Max/MSP is definitely programming, as you're using code modules to build something such as a synth or delay or drum machine pr what have you.

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

Well, ok so everything is programming but then where do you draw the line and post in this section? Why don't people talk about ableton much here?

For example, I automate almost everything in ableton with clip envelopes. Most of the time I use unlinked envelopes so the automation is looped at a different frequency than the clip, and loop different parameters of the same effect at different frequencies, so they interact polyrhythmically. Usually not "simple" stuff like uh I dunno chorus ramping up 50-100% frequency every 3/8ths and 30/90% feedback alternating at 1/4...

OK forget my other questions if you want... do you guys even know what I'm talking about? Am I all alone here? Has ANYONE else ever unlinked a clip envelope??
BTW this is kinda a reason why I haven't explored MAX/MSP... I'm pretty overwhelmed as it is and I can already do the "LFO any parameter" thing people keep talking about. Except I can also choose the exact "waveform" for that LFO.

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

If you would program a patch in Max4Live you would discuss it here, if you would patch a great patch on your modular you would post it here (or in the circle jerk/best thread of the forum "the hardware thread"), if you would program in a fully modular environment, here, Reaktor, here.
Ableton live has it own thread...

This area is for neat things you make with modular synthesizers, audio programming environments, or any neat ways of using things differently. And I'd only go to Max/MSP if you want to do things that your normal software doesn't do, or if you want to do something much differently than how it's done in software. Basically, unless you want to do something really specific, I'd stick with the software you have. Max/MSP is programming, as in code; data, integers, floats, strings, and/or statements, if/then's, debugging. It helps to know a bit about programming before using Max/MSP because it's less of a 'plug and play' sort of environment such as reason or any audio software where you're linking up effects and instruments. You need an idea of what you want to do, and you're dealing with different data types that aren't always compatible. There's a different philosophy, I suppose, than using audio software.

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

Well yeah Ableton has its own thread but this section isn't labeled "Max/MSP, Reaktor & modular synth discussion"

hence the initial question...

I don't really care, I guess I'm just lonely or something lol...

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with Ableton I guess...

I definitely don't know what I want to do, so it's fine. Except that sometimes I think when that's the case, different DAWs are more conducive to different workflow obviously and you can end up with different music. But I can't imagine MAX would enable me to be more productive overall at this point.

It's modular systems and programming (Max/MSP and Reaktor being one of many, many, many avenues of programming)

that's what makes modular-psychos a bit different from the average musician.

productivity is a laughable term. it's more about experimentation and the attainment of some sort knowledge/intuitive understanding of what you're exploring/messing with.

I fully relate to that. maybe I'm such a psycho that I consider experimentation to be productive I think I'm also just more visual/spatially centered.

I guess IDK what you're saying exactly though, would you like, not care if you were working your ass off for years just experimenting and didn't put out a single track? Because, unless I knew for a fact that I was going to make an epic 2 disc concept album afterwards, I'd prefer to be putting out something that actually sounds vaguely musical in the meantime.

So there's still the question of whether I should try maxmsp or not. I think experimentation is still in priority for me...

yeah, no I didn't mean "putting out" a track though, I mean making anything that most people recognize as musical.

Re: What is modular systems & programming?

I'm completely alright with just experimenting, so long as I am discovering really awesome things. I would like to be doing tracks though, to keep up my musical output, and to be utilizi those experiments. Bu again, if I'm really into something, I may just continue experimenting.
