How to produce dubstep sounds live?

I work in a club doing lights and I'm no audio guy, but I'm interested in making live dubstep sounds if anyone can suggest a fairly cheap way of doing that. Do they make effects boxes you can tie a mic into and put that sort of effect on anything you want? And run a DI to it so you can do keyboards? A person I work with suggested a theremin. Would that do it? Or are there better choices at lower prices?

Thanks for any help!

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

uh... 'dubstep sounds?'

do you just mean wobble bass?

because a theremin isn't gonna like... do that. i think the person you work with is an idiot and doesn't know what they're on about.

the most common way of getting a wobble is simple; lowpass filter with a fair amount of res sweeping rhythmically through the lower frequencies. add some overdrive maybe, maybe modulate some other stuff with it, done.

But without any gear or a pc? Probably a microphone through an effects box / pedal and just wub wub wub with your mouth (Beardyman style). I'm also not too sure what dubstep sounds you're talking about...

well of course you can just go 'WOOOOO' into a mic and move it back and forth past your mouth... you miught look like a dumbass, and it may not be the most consistent sound. Also, i'm pretty sure that human voices don't really go low enough for a really deep bass. :V

my point though is that it doesn't matter what gear, anything with a lowpass filter you can play with will work really.

Hmm. Good point. Maybe use another low freq output device...?

^^^ I've heard that these were the precursor to the wub wub wub bass. Although though back then it was a bit more like wuuuub wub ww wwuuuuuub. They had to refine that sound; learn to control it until it became the sound as we know it. Very interesting stuff when you look into the history of the dubstep wobble bass.

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

Yeah... like above, all you would need is anything with filter LFO.

Kinda of a weird question...

Why don't you just make .mp3 files and play them on a laptop? Or get a sample pack if you can't make them.

I want to have some marching drums on stage and pump them through something to produce that effect. Also bells, and a contra bass horn if possible. Also some bass guitar and general keyboard stuff if possible. If that works, I'd also like to try animal sounds like owls hooting, dogs barking, and pig noises. A rooster crowing could possibly sound bad ass...

You really should leave the audio to the audio guy.

And the audio guy really has no business doing the DJ's job.

I'm sorry, but if there's a guy playing onstage, he's gonna be the only motherfucker playing.

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

what i don't get is, how do you be a member of IDMf and not just learn to make music whether you want to or not? if you read a whole page of threads in the studio, that right there is a fucking megaload of information, discourse, study, examples, and links to more information. You don't even have to ask anything to get started... just read and learn, mothafucka.

I hope some people play drums through an LFO or whatever it takes...eventually...regardless of whether I hook them up, the sound guy hooks them up, the DJ hooks then up, or someone else hooks them up...

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

Its called a delay unit, for a proper dub sound without the hassle of tape but with the right crustyness you want an old digital delay/echo such as an HH

If you want the wobble of dubSTEP, then you need either a filter with lfo or an analogue monosynth with lfo

other classic dub effects include such things as sirens... and dont forget the wood block for that authentic trollStep sound

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

What is the dub in dub step. It makes me think of gangsta riMs so I hated it off hand when I first heard the term. That and I felt like people were using it as a rebranding of music ive been listening to for years but people hated it and now its the cool thing.

Re: How to produce dubstep sounds live?

After reading this thread my question is...

Does anyone else feel like they're on LSD or is it just me?

OP: Oh, and there is this guy that does wonderful YouTube Dubstep tutorials. I can't think of his name so just look up Dubstep Mime and all of your questions will be answered.
