Coursera Courses (Composition, etc)

Just thought to share:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

I'm taking that course for the next 6 weeks.
It's probably somewhat above my head. I'm like a little encyclopedic tome about music history from the late 60's to today, but my theory base is pretty shaky, so there's a ton of wikipedia reading involved to catch up with the course.

Thus far pretty cool.

Anyone else taken or taking any coursera courses?
Any recommendations?

Re: Coursera Courses (Composition, etc)

I took a couple of them, mostly on synthesis. Quite well done, but a bit too generic for me, maybe because I knew some of the stuff a bit.
I didn't take part in any of the activities though...
This was one of them:

Will do.
I'm making an effort to understand everything so there's been a ton of catchup reading that I've had to do thus far.
Wikipedia is amazing.

Re: Coursera Courses (Composition, etc)

This is pretty cool, I'm really interested in learning more on my own but still on a professional level.

So how does it work exactly? It isn't really clear explained on the website.
Are the classes free to join? Or are you actively being followed up by some mentors?
I assume you get each lesson by video and that you have to do some exercices every time and stuff like that?
Please explain

I just signed up by clicking the link- take class for free. The link provided in the OP has the course outline and seems to explain things pretty good.

I think this will be fun to refresh some of the things I learned a while back. It looks fun!

It's all free.
There are assignments.
You get graded on them.
There are a lot of lectures.

There are boards for questions.
Lots of clutter on those, and a lot of stupid people.

Thanks for this, g..I just signed up for the "Fundamentals of Music Theory" course, which will start in 6 months time. As I have no formal trying in Music Theory, this is really cool.

Seems really cool, I'll follow it up. Not going to sign up for this one though, might not be a good idea with a month full of exams...

Re: Coursera Courses (Composition, etc)

I just listened to the first video and I am super impressed. I highly recommend this...you may have to do a bit of homework to get up to speed- if you do not know how to read music, or know your scales and chords. In any case I think this is great.

- Thanks again for sharing this...this is exactly what I need to get me going right now. I am really excited about this.

Re: Coursera Courses (Composition, etc)

I think I will be signing up to "Introduction to Music Production".
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

It's a pretty basic course introducing the basics of recording, editing, mixing and a little bit of synthesis. I probably already know a large chunk of this but it should be nice to finally get some structured information. Everything I learned so far is mostly own experience and some short tutorials here and there, my lack of technical knowledge is getting annoying now I'm using more and more hardware.
I'm excited to learn some new interesting stuff

The site is pretty neat btw.

I also signed up for this one. The teacher for this class (Loudon Stearns) teaches two more classes for Berklee College of Music that run around $1400. Pretty awesome this one is free!

Yeah, it's really cool that you can follow all this free classes. I've already recommended it to a couple of friends.

Does anyone know how they support themselves? Are part of the courses paid or is there some kind of support from a government/company? It isn't mentioned anywhere on their site.

I still have some exams these weeks but it's nice as a break in between the boring theory. Just need to make sure I don't spend too much time on this
The teacher is a pretty cool guy and it's been pretty instructive so far.
Curious what the peer-review thingy will be.
