Depends on what search engine you want to conquer. If it's Google, then you need a lot of external links to your site, which removes the "on page" SEO idea. Next up is to use some good non-poison keywords, and only 5 or 7 of them IIRC, or Google will punish your rating for spam.
Also, don't try to hide on page keywords by using the same background color as your font color, they will spot it and punish that as well. In short, keep it clean and by the rules, then wait, and wait and wait. Also remember to tag your images with appropriate ALTs.
Really you need those circular links with pages that have high SEO already to get good results. Facebook, popular forums, soundcloud, popular blogs, etc.
That is one thing, and an important one for sure that I was on about with the external links. But Google is like a library, and while a book on display in the lobby will always be popular, then they also count the number of times any "book" has been lent. So you can actually bypass the display sites with on page SEO. It will just take a bit longer, for sure.
