Audio interface

what external audio interface do you use?

doing a little research, strongly leaning towards the Scarlett 2i4, but was wondering what other idmf inhabitants use

Re: Audio interface

Did you not want us posting if we have the 2i4? If so, disregard.

It's the only one I've owned, aside from a dusty old roland (which is more of a workstation) and from what I gathered it seemed to be a favorite for it's price.

Haven't had any issues with it and the input/playback knob is helpful when lining in.

I use an Apogee Duet 2 and I absolutely love it. Sounds magnificent, both going in and coming out, and it's tiny.
It's Mac only, so if you're on windows this means nothing.

Re: Audio interface

2i4 user here also, no complaints. Except for tracking external instruments like the occasional guitar, and recording samples with a mic, I'm totally ITB these days. As such I don't need any more I/O than what it has to offer and I find it to be suitable for all my needs.

Inputs on the front are crystal clear, just like they say in the reviews.

Re: Audio interface

Just so everyone doesn't answer the same - I have an Edirol UA-4FX. Can't say I'd recommend it in particular, it could definitely use more inputs and different outputs. It does have midi capability too. It's not really for sale anymore though. At the time, it was good value for a low budget consumer. Roland has excellent driver support though - even for this older product.

Re: Audio interface

I have the Saffire 6 USB, it think it has exactly the same I/O as the 2i4 but I'm not completely sure. Bought it because it was a bit cheaper, don't regret it (don't know how much better the 2i4 is :p )

It works great, never had any problems with it (I have it like a year now). Very sturdy, sounds okay (afaik) and also works with Linux (if that is needed).

Re: Audio interface

I have a used Zoom R8 that doubles as an 8-fader Control Surface. It works pretty well for those functions. It also has a drum machine and a pad sampler, but those functions are a bit lacking in features even though the drum sounds are good. I was lucky because I caught it for 140 dollars instead of 300 it usually sells for. But I really miss my M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496's. Those were better quality and had MIDI DINs. I often buy used gear so it would be nice to have MIDI DINs.

Re: Audio interface

At work we have both a Digidesign 96 and a MOTU 24IO. Both are cracking bits of kit. Obviously, these are both very expensive and PCI based however.

In smaller applications, I'm still a massive fan of MOTU. The 8Pre, the 828, the Traveller and more. Their build quality is awesome and I've never suffered drop out issues which I have with Focusrite, M-Audio, Lexicon and others.

Re: Audio interface

anyone know how these go with latency? on my mac I can usually get down to 64 samples with about 6 audio channels in ableton with minimal effects, hoping the new interface will at least half my latency

Re: Audio interface

Apogee. Im tellin you man. Unless you really want to do multitrack recording with your interface as well.

I'm rockin a set right now with an insane amount of audio clips (Pushing 2000), more effects than I know what to do with, at 64 samples (round trip latency about 5.75 ms, which is practically negligible), with no dropouts whatsoever.

It runs pricey for the i/o it has, but it is a fucking BEAST of an interface.

Re: Audio interface

I'm planning on picking up the Scarlett 2i4 within the next couple days. I like it because it's cheap and it looks aesthetically great (If it was ugly I would probably still buy it but it literally is a plus).

I'll also pick up my first mic (shure sm 58 or 57, not sure yet) so this will help me get that connected and I'm hoping it will solve this one issue I am having....

I use to produce on my macbook pro 13" 2009 and the sound was beautiful and crystal clear. I noticed it bing a huge step up from my very old IBM thinkbook on xp pro. I sold that laptop because of hard times but about a month ago I built a new pc. The sound sucks on it, but only in Ableton. I'll get a lot of cracks or strange glitches. It's a very nice computer but I'm hoping getting this interface will give me better sound reproduction than my macbook pro did.

FYI, my motherboard is an Asus z87-a, so it's a decent board so I know its not bad or defective, I just don't think it has the capabilities for Ableton.

I've known sound cards to do that before. I think it has something to do with output settings in windows or some shiz like that, I had an issue with sound coming through HDMI cable even tho I chose the output to come through speaker out. a quick google helped fix that issue.

I work at a restaurant and this guy who is basically a regular also owns a music store. He recommended and sold me [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
interface, made by A R T. I'll probably get a better one when I get some KRK monitors way later down the road. I have a condenser mic that I've tested with it and so far it works perfectly. Everything sounds clear. I got it for $90 USD which I thought was a great price brand new.

So far it works as intended. I also picked up some ATH-M50s to replace my M30s and i'm very happy with that upgrade.

i've been rethinking my whole setup. looking in to lots of options and this one looks great.

I've got an ADAT to analog converter, so all of my HW would connect to the optical IO and leave the Preamps and DI readily available.

I had been looking at mixers and then at tube preamp gear (in addition to the DBX386 that I am currently using), Its rare that I spend money on my studio, but this thing might be the winner. Especially if the ADC's, pre's and clocking in this unit is as solid as they say.

:edit: its also a control room device and monitor switcher. saves me from having to do something like a Mackie Big Knob to switch between sets of monitors.

+1 for MOTU. Buy used. I got an 828MKII firewire for like...285USD? I'd say go with USB over firewire. Just because it seems firewire is going to go away.
